The project hinted at the launch of the blockchain in a video with a quote from famous astronomer Carl Sagan and an image of a canary among the stars.
Cross-chain network Cosmos is developing a new blockchain aimed at allowing developers to experiment with different protocols. In its quarterly report published on October 19, Cosmos said its Sagan blockchain was currently in development. The project hinted at the network’s launch in a video with a quote from famous astronomer Carl Sagan and an image of a canary among the stars.
The canary image may refer to the chain being an experimental “canary network,” the term used by interoperability protocol Polkadot to describe its test network, Kusama. In the case of Kusama, the network allows developers to create and use a parachain or test governance, staking, and other Polkadot features in a real-world environment. Cosmos has grown steadily following the March launch of its cross-blockchain communication protocol , which allows cryptoassets to be easily transferred between compatible blockchain networks, including those for decentralized finance. According to data from Mapofzones, 1,285,426 transfers have been made in the Cosmos ecosystem in the last 30 days.
Sagan’s announcement comes as Cosmos is also working on a rollup scaling technology to allow developers to build Cosmos-based networks as rollups that can be deployed as clusters within the protocol’s cross-chain communication zones. The solution, called Optimint, is intended to be a “drop-in replacement” for the Tendermint framework on which it is built.
